Występowanie

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w Azji.

Systematyka

Gatunkiem typowym jest Felis macrocelis (= Felis nebulosa). Do rodzaju do niedawna należał jeden gatunek N. nubelosa[3], jednak na podstawie analizy mitochondrialnego DNA, mikrosatelit oraz badań morfologicznych wyodrębniono drugi gatunek[4][5][6]:

NEOFELIS DIARDI -PANTERA BORNEOAŃSKA, PANTERA Z BORNEO

Gatunek drapieżnego ssaka z rodziny kotowatych (Felidae), znana od roku 1821 jako podgatunek pantery mglistej (Neofelis nebulosa), zidentyfikowana w 2007 na podstawie badań DNA jako nowy gatunek[3][4][5][6], który oddzielił się od pantery mglistej 1,4 miliona lat temu. Występuje na Sumatrze i Borneo. Od swoich kontynentalnych krewniaków różni się umaszczeniem i rozłożeniem cętek na futrze. Szacuje się, że w lasach Indonezji istnieje ok. 18 000 sztuk tych kotów. Specjaliści oceniają, że na Borneo żyje od 5 do 11 tysięcy Neofelis diardi, a na Sumatrze kolejne 3 do 7 tysięcy.

Podgatunki

Na podstawie analizy genetycznej wyróżniono dwa podgatunki N. diardi[6]:

1 Neofelis diardi borneensis Wilting, Buckley-Beason, Feldhaar, Gadau, O'Brien & Linsenmair, 2007 – Indonezja (Sumatra), status IUCN EN (zagrożony wyginięciem)[7]

2 Neofelis diardi diardi (G. Cuvier, 1823) – Indonezja (Kalimantan), Malezja (Sabah, Sarawak), status IUCN EN (zagrożony wyginięciem)[8]
